Drifting between Nightwatch & First Light

Music is a powerful tool. Soothing voices and soft melody transcends across geographically, bringing me on the tops of snow covered mountain, beautifully white icy lakes and closing thy eyes, I can feel the feather-like-flakes kissing my cheeks. Aww, the love of the cold white winter topped up with take-away hot chocolate to warm the soul.

Silje’s silky vocals has this power to bring a smile to my face, her recent works are incredible. Invokes so much pretty emotions in a person. The tingling of the little toes, the feeling of romance in the air.

Music is such an escape. Dance between night fall & day break. You can dream incredible dreams.

Music is global, freedom of expression through pop, rock, jazz, blues, country, metal & new age. But I rejoice through jazzy works. Oh, I’m dreaming… of a white Christmas all over again. =)

I’m currently listening to the albums Nightwatch and First Light by Silje Nergaard. Soothing tunes to listening to whilst on a long drive around the country side on a restless night.

And we got our medal!!!

What a tough fight it was in the Olympics 2008 in the table tennis game. But in short, sweet and sharp words.

WE GOT OUR MEDAL!!!!!!!!

What a well deserved medal for the trio Feng Tian Wei, Wang Yue Gu & Li Jia Wei. And for the glory of our country. HOORAY!!

Match 1: In furious fashion, Feng annihilated Korea’s Dang to a 3-0 match.

Match 2: Nail biting and upsetting match as Li fought to win her opponent Kim, but it was clear that the Kim’s cool composure won over Li’s frustrations.

Match 3: Wang and Li made a comeback in the duo round, which was beautifully done.

Match 4: I think Wang must have been tired from the previous match and though fierce in fighting spirits, it was not enough to win Dang.

Match 5: Cool as a cucumber, and never showing a single sign of emotions, Feng nailed it for Singapore.

Wow, the matches got me sitting at the edge of the sofa, and with the final match won, HOOOOORAAAAY!!!! The taste of crawling your way through to a medal and finally securing it after 40 years is just so sweet.

Chocolate Scouffle & Royaltine

A few months back, life by ST (Straits Times) featured 50 best cakes in Singapore. Chocolate Scouffle by Sweet Secrets was mentioned. Now, I have been a die-hard fan of Chocolate Royaltine (from the same store) since my 14th birthday, so I was a little saddened that my favourite cake was not mentioned. Nonetheless, I decided to give my taste buds a treat and purchased the recommended cake. Ratings: Smooth and even taste of chocolate throughout. But, the cake just lacks this va-va voom factor to it that Chocolate Royaltine has. I guess I’m still sticking to my all time favourite for my birthday cake for the years to come!

The cakes can be purchased from:

Great World City
1 Kim Seng Promenade
#B1-06 Great World City
S(237994)

or at their other outlets.

Style starts young…

I must be a blog stalker these days, randomly stumbling upon interesting blogs after blogs and getting hooked reading them. Recently, I have been more incline to be caught onto fashion blogs. Today, I happen to chance upon Tavi’s blog and I was intrigued.

She is only 12 and yet has an explosive style of fashion! Preferring to be clad in t-shirt and shorts when I was her age, I am definitely sure I was no where close to her style of fashion. This is proof that you can be stylish at any age. You go girl!

The Waltz

I was watching the series “we got married” (A popular k-tv show in which artistes are paired up to live as married couples) and there was this episode in which Alex & Sinae were dancing to “The Waltz” by Silje Nergaard.

Just listening to the song alone jots memories of me swooning with the melody whilst studying for my finals during my exchange. As I listened to the song repeatedly whilst watching the soft snow fall on the white grounds, I could not help smiling and feel so very warm inside even though it was a freezing -40 Not to say, it did keep my spirits up throughout my finals!

The Waltz (Silje Nergaard)

Strike up the band let it play, love songs to haunt me and I will stay.
But when it comes to a Waltz, both words & music will ring falls.
For you waltzed in and spun my world around in dizzy dance I swirl.
Suddenly you waltzed away from me.
Those violins they must go, so no careless sound with a bow.
They play on the strings of my heart, and make me remember from lovers heart, how you waltzed in and spun my world around in dizzy dance I swirl.
But suddenly you waltzed away from me.

Strike up the band let it play, whatever it chooses and I will say, play me a waltz if you will.
I’ll sit here and listen waiting until, my love returns to take my world, and spin it around in this dizzy swirl.
Where girl loves boy, and boy loves girl.
And feet don’t touch the ground.

Bagel attack!

Two months ago, I was in agony of not being able to enjoy a proper toasted bagel with cream cheese. Lo and behold, whilst dining out with my friends today, I managed to catch sight that Gloria Jean’s Coffee was selling bagels!

Upon further questioning by bagel-deficient moi, the shop attendant told me that they do sell bagels alongside with cream cheese foc! Though it was a diy spread.

A bite into the bagel brings back memories of my Tim Hortons bagel. Second bite reveals that the bagel is not as ’sour’ as it should be, but it’s way better than the other bagel I bought 2 months ago. I’m still missing my Tim Hortons breakfast combo…

I’m a tomb raider!

Abu Simbel.

Here rest 2 enormous temples of Ramesses II. Moved from its original location as a precautionary measure to avoid being submerged during and after the construction of the Aswan high dam.

The massive effort put into moving this entire structure is evident. Only upon close scrutiny can one really observe the fine precise cuts in the rocks for the relocation project.

For that, waking up at 3am to catch the military convoy was worth it.

Edfu

I was completely wowed by how gigantic this site was. Guarded by 4 falcons, this site is no doubt dedicated to the God Horus (often represented as a falcon).

God Horus is widely depicted in Egyptian art and can be found in most of these archaeological sites.

Walking the grounds of this temple, I felt as if I have been brought back to ancient times. All the temple needed was throngs of Egyptians buzzing through this temple, to complete the look.

The Valley of the Kings & Queens

If you have gone to the pyramids in Giza and was fascinated by stories of treasures and mummies, you would most likely want to visit these 2 places where Egypt’s past rulers and wives called their final resting place. Children alike, do not be bored because this place looks like a blown up desert disneyland.

To guard the secrets of the tombs at both valleys, picture taking in the tombs are a big no-no, unless you are willing to donate YSL 40,000 to the authorities. Treasure hunters will be disappointed to know that the finest treasures of most of the tombs have been stolen by tomb raiders (except for King Tut whose tomb is strategically placed under Ramesses II) or are placed at Cairo museum. Though, in my eyes, the beautiful calligraphy and inscription on the walls of the tombs alone make up for the missing treasures.

Coliseum of Memnon

Just a 10,000 stone throw away from the Valleys of the Kings and Queens lies these 2 very very grand statues. Completely erected out from stones, though partially destroyed due to years long of erosion, they both bear the mark of incredulous creativity and builds-man-ship of ancient Egyptians.

The temple that they were suppose to stand on, stretches a great 1000 stones (or maybe more) long, but is unfortunately now a barren piece of desert land.

*nb: that piece of black/white bloth wrapped around my bag is the famous 25 pounds.

Embrace yourself for my favourite Egyptian site…

The Temple of Luxor

When you think of Egypt, you always immediately associate it with pyramids, mummies and camels. In my opinion, this silent gem is really a sight to behold. To me, it outshines the pyramids or even the deep valleys where the once world’s greatest rulers rest.

Entering the large premise, one cannot miss the towering pylon (or entrance wall). Inside the temple, were rows of neatly arranged pillars inscribed with wise words from the past. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. As this place was mainly used for festivals and celebrations, it had a bit of everything - centre room for worship, a mini temple at the back, an obelisk, statues everywhere. Apparently, the place where I was doing my jumping stint used to be laid with sparkling marble floor that reflected light onto the colour stained pillars, thus creating a magnificent sight to behold within the walls itself.

Not too far away from this temple, lies the Karnak. It seems that the Egyptian government plans to join these 2 archaeological sites together to form an open museum.

Fall is coming, means… New boots!

Last year, when I was in Canada, I went crazy boot hunting. First, I could finally have a change in my style of dressing. Second, the many warnings from my friends of Winnipeg’s harsh -30 degrees C winter further convinced me that I really needed to invest in a pair of boots. 2 months worth of plodding through thick snow and bracing through -40 degrees windchill in my trusty black leather boots, my little toes were happily warm, so was I. I was a complete boots covert.

Fast forward a year later, my pretty boots are sitting in my cupboard, still being absolutely pretty. But here I am, lusting for a new pair of boots. This time with heels! I missed out on Aldo’s heely boots last year. But fear no longer, because, Aldo has launched their fall collection. All hail the new collection. I just need to transport myself in cars and stay in air-condition place in humid and warm tropical Singapore. Er, yes, and ship that new pair of pretty heely boots from US!

National Day Parade 2008

In dedication for my love for NDPs. Happy Birthday Singapore!

The Singapore skyline has changed in recent years. Yet, it still remains as iconic.

I love NDP for the:

1) Thrill of seeing the Red Lions parachute into the stadium and hear the crowd scream “Go Singapore”!

2) Aerial display. How can you not drool at the sight of the F16s dash across the sky. They are awfully handsome in the sky. But my heart goes out to the star of NDP 2008… The BLACK KNIGHTS. Trust me, they rule the sky!!!

3) Dazzling fireworks. Rumours say that it is a million dollars project.

Stand up for Singapore, even if it’s raining.

From the National Stadium to Padang to the world’s largest Floating Platform, NDPs are just outdoing the last.

Being the fanatic NDP lover despite my friends endless protests, I have been very blessed to have been able to attend NDPs in all the locations, either as a performing participant, usher or guest. And I have to say that NDP 2008 surpasses my expectations. (Perhaps because I am still drooling from the air display by the BKs or perhaps because I finally got the opportunity to sit on red sector seats!!) Now, the fanatic me shall just tune into the live telecast of the celebrations.

*NB: pictures were taken not at the actual parade but NE2.
